The fossilization of wood is a set of processes by which all the organic material has been replaced with minerals (most of the times varieties of silica), preserving in some cases of permineralization the most delicate details of the wood, such as cell walls. The petrification process happens underground, when the wood is buried under sediments, being preserved thanks to the absence of oxygen.
