Type 316 stainless steel is an austenitic chrome nickel stainless steel containing molybdenum. This addition increases the overall corrosion resistance, improves resistance to chloride ion solutions, and provides greater resistance to elevated temperatures. Properties are similar to Type 304, except this alloy is slightly more solid at elevated temperatures. Corrosion resistance is better, particularly against sulfuric, hydrochloric, acetic, formic and tartaric acids; acid sulfates and alkali chlorides. In costume jewelery it can be considered the best stainless steel at all.
