What is the Peyote technique?
Peyote is a bead weaving technique that has been used for years to create beautiful jewelry and accessories, especially with Miyuki beads. Known for its versatility and precision, the peyote technique allows jewelry makers to create intricate patterns and unique designs using small beads. One of the most popular beads used in the peyote technique is Miyuki Delica, which are high-quality, uniform cylindrical beads with a smooth, shiny finish.
In this tutorial, I'll teach you how to use the peyote technique with miyuki delica to create your own custom jewelry and accessories. You'll discover how to string the beads, how to weave the rows, and how to add new rows to create intricate patterns. Whether you're a beginner at bead weaving or an experienced crafter, the peyote technique with miyuki delica is a versatile technique that offers endless creative possibilities. So grab your materials and let's get started!
Material
- Miyuki Delica 11/0 beads in the colors you want to use
- Special beading needle, thin and long
- High strength thread, such as nymo B (or other similar thread)
- Closing, if you are creating a bracelet or necklace with the peyote technique
- Scissors to cut the thread
- Bead board or flat surface for weaving and keeping beads organized
- Tweezers, if preferred, to help thread the beads onto the needle.
Please note that the materials you will need may vary depending on the project you wish to create and the specific peyote technique you are using. If you are new to bead weaving, we recommend starting with a basic selection of miyuki delica colors, needles, and thread to familiarize yourself with the technique and then experimenting with different materials and patterns as you gain more experience.
Realization:
Threading the beads onto the needle: Start by threading the thread onto the special beading needle. If you find it difficult to thread the needle, you can use tweezers to help you. Make sure you leave enough thread on the end to work with.
-
Create the base row: Take two miyuki delica beads and slide them down until they reach the end of the thread. Then, thread the needle through the two bottom beads, creating a loop with the beads. Next, add another miyuki delica bead and thread it over the needle and the two bottom beads. Then, thread the needle through the miyuki delica bead you just added and pull the thread through to secure it in place.
-
Knitting the rows: Starting from the base row, continue adding miyuki delica beads to create the next row. To do this, add a miyuki delica bead and thread it over the needle and the miyuki delica bead you just added in the previous row. Then, thread the needle through the newly added miyuki delica bead and pull the thread through to secure it in place. Continue adding miyuki delica beads in this manner, threading the needle through the beads in the previous row and adding a new bead, until you have completed the row.
-
Adding New Rows: To add new rows, start by adding a new miyuki delica bead to the end of the last row you just completed. Then, thread your needle through the miyuki delica bead that is on the previous row, just below the miyuki delica bead you just added. Next, add another miyuki delica bead and thread it over the needle and the miyuki delica bead you just threaded through. Then, thread your needle through the newly added miyuki delica bead and pull the thread through to secure it in place. Continue adding miyuki delica beads in this manner until you have completed the new row.
Continue weaving: Continue adding rows in this manner, alternating between rows of adding beads and rows of weaving through the beads of the previous row. To create patterns or designs, simply change the order or sequence of the beads you are using.

Tips to follow
- Thread management: It is important to keep the thread taut as you work so that the beads do not slip. It is also advisable to use a strong thread such as nymo B so that it does not break easily.
- Needle Usage: Use a special beading needle that has a small eye so it can easily pass through the miyuki delica beads.
- Choosing colors: It is important to choose colors that complement each other to get a good result in your design. You can choose contrasting shades to make patterns more visible or softer shades for more subtle designs.
- Complex patterns: If you want to create more complex patterns, it is advisable to draw the pattern before you start knitting and mark the colors with codes to make the pattern easier to read.
- Closing the work: To close the work, you can sew a button on one end and make a loop with beads on the other end to secure the button. You can also use jewelry clasps sold at specialty craft stores.
- Maintaining tension: To maintain proper tension on your thread, it is recommended to use a tension board or thread tensioner. This will help you maintain even tension throughout your work and prevent twisting.
I hope these tips and tricks are useful to you in making the peyote technique with miyuki delica easier.
