Learn how to make this simple bracelet using flat knots, also called square knots.
How to make a flat knot step by step:
Materials:
- Rope or cord (any material and thickness). In this case we used 1mm Griffin thread.
- Scissors (optional, to cut off excess string)
Steps to follow to make the flat knot bracelet:
Preparation:
- Cut three pieces of string of the same length. If you want to make a flat knot with a single strand in the middle, you can use a longer piece for this purpose.
- Place the three strings together, parallel to each other. You can secure them with a paper clip or tape to keep them in place.
-
First simple knot:
- Take the right rope and cross it over the other two ropes.
- Then pass it under the left rope.
- Pull the right string to tighten the knot.
Second simple knot:
- Take the left rope and cross it over the other two ropes.
- Then pass it under the right string.
- Pull the left string to tighten the knot.
Adjusting the knot:
- Hold the two outer strings and pull them in opposite directions to tighten the flat knot.
- Make sure the knot is tight and the strings are aligned.
-
Repeat:
- Repeat steps 2 through 4 to create as many flat knots as you need.
Tips:
- If you are a beginner, you can practice making flat knots with a thick, soft cord. This will make it easier for you to see the steps and understand the technique.
- You can use a pin or needle to help you thread the strings through the knots.
- If you want to make the flat knot more decorative, you can use different colors of string or add beads.
- To prevent the flat knot from coming undone, you can lightly burn the ends of the strings.
Variations:
-
Flat knot with a single cord:
- Follow steps 1 to 4, but using only one string in the center.
- In step 2, cross the center string over the other two strings and then pass it under both of them.
- In step 3, cross the center string under the other two strings and then pass it over both of them.
-
Double flat knot:
- Follow steps 1 through 4 to create a simple flat knot.
- Then, repeat steps 2 through 4 to create another flat knot on top of the first one.
