Zamak Jewelry – What it is and how to care for it
Share
Zamak is an alloy of Zinc with Aluminum, Magnesium and Copper, which makes it a material with high resistance and hardness. The word ZAMAK is formed by the initials of these metals in German.
This is why ZAMAK has recently become very popular as a part of costume jewellery; despite not having the same appearance as steel or silver, it is quite resistant, its possibilities are endless and it is much more economical. It is common to see it as part of leather bracelets, necklaces and rings since a large number of fittings have been created from this material. Normally, these pieces are usually given a silver or other metal plating such as gold or bronze to obtain different finishes.
The advantage of using Zamak in our creations is that it does not lose its colour over time. You can see a loss of shine in these pieces, but by using a little water and neutral soap and/or any metal cleaner we can recover their original colour. For its conservation, it is recommended to store it in a cool, dry place and inside an organza or cellophane bag. It is also a hypoallergenic material, as it is nickel-free, so its use is recommended for any type of person.
If you are looking for new materials for your creations, this option is one of the most recommended.
